Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as Vinayaka Chavithi, is celebrated all across the country to mark the birth ceremony of Lord Ganesha. Worshipped as the God of wisdom and new beginnings, he is the son of Lord Shiva and a Goddess Parvati. As per the Hindu calendar, the festival is held in the month of Bhadra i.e. in the month of August and September and this year, the grand celebration of the 10-day Ganesh Chaturthi will start on August 22.

Besides being celebrated to mark Lord Ganesha’s birth, the festival is also associated with an instance in the Hindu mythology. Following the making of Baby Ganesha by Goddess Parvati with the help of sandalwood paste, the goddess asked him to guard the entrance of the place where she had headed to bathe. However, when lord Shiva insisted the premises, Lord Ganesha tried to stop him, which in turn enraged the God and he severed Lord Ganesha’s head.
