healthy democracy lies at the heart of solving the major issues facing the world in 2020, such as protecting the environment, fighting for equality, and promoting economic stability.
On 15 September – International Day of Democracy – the UK’s democracy support organisation, Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), is hosting an online event for young people to explore the major challenges facing democracy and to celebrate this year’s democratic achievements.
WFD’s Director of Programmes, Shannon O’Connell, will be in conversation with inspiring young people from around the world who are leading the charge to strengthen democracy.
Shaun Bailey MP: Shaun Bailey is a Conservative Party politician who was elected as the Member of Parliament for West Bromwich West at the 2019 general election. Raised in Shropshire, he read Law and French at Aberystwyth University, graduating with an LLB. He studied for a Master’s in Legal Practice at the University of the West of England in Bristol. Prior to his election, Bailey worked as a trainee solicitor.
Dyah Roro Esti Widya Putri MP: As an elected Member of Parliament at The House of Representatives, Republic of Indonesia, Dyah Roro has campaigned extensively to strengthen environmental democracy and to develop environmental policy and work towards the overall transition towards a more sustainable future. Dyah Roro founded the Indonesian Energy and Environmental Institute (IE2I), an NGO based in Jakarta, Indonesia. This NGO is dedicated to raising awareness about global warming and its negative consequence of climate change.
Abur Livinus Ternenge: As a Politics with Values Youth Ambassador in Nigeria, Abur volunteered with the Center for Democracy and Development as the Niger state coordinator during the 2019 general election, where he recruited, trained and deployed observers to observe 2019 general elections.
Dona Kosturanova: Dona is a WFD Programme Manager in North Macedonia, where she has led a variety of activities to engage hundreds of young people in democracy. She is also the former Executive Director of Youth Educational Forum and was a founder and vice-president of the National Youth Council in North Macedonia. She has worked on different public policies, research and advocacy initiatives for youth and education in North Macedonia
